Igor Busquets

Beginning

I started drawing at 24 years old. After studying with Manny Clark for a few years I started working with illustration and as a graphic designer, later art director. Meanwhile I begin practicing painting in digital media.

I learned about the master painters from the past, and admired greatly their work in museums. I never will forget when I saw a Rembrandt self-portrait with my own eyes. Then learned (in books and museums) about Sargent, Boldini, Sorolla and Zorn, and they become my heroes in art.

Several years later I experimented with real oil paints and love it: the physical beauty of paint, the mixing into many colors and tones with just a few pigments and the chaos trying to handle it usign brushes. I started to practice more and more and to learn about the technical methods of my heroes, painting wet-into-wet, also know as “alla prima”.

Education

From 2024 to 2025 I did the online Patreon Painting Course and one year of mentorship with Alex Tzavaras. His coaching was essential in my improvement and his technical clarity is really good, I definitely recommend his content.

In 2026 I participated on a in-person workshop with Anastasia Pollard and a live model for 3 days. Her presence and great teaching pushed my skills a lot.

I honestly strive to paint with oils and draw with charcoal and graphite the best I can with my current skills.

Today

I paint oil portraits from life, as much as I can, and try to capture something of the personality of the living model, while interacting with it. When working from life is not possible, I do work from my own photographs too, keeping in mind that it’s not the same experience but a practical way in our current time.
